BBC Radio 2 presenter Sara Cox completed her five-day Great Northern Marathon Challenge on Friday, raising over £4 million for Children In Need. The Prince of Wales, William, congratulated her in a video message as she finished the equivalent of five marathons in Pudsey, Leeds.

Cox covered 135 miles over five days, starting at Kielder Forest and travelling through Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The challenge is the longest ever undertaken by BBC Radio 2 for the annual fundraiser. She carried a Pudsey Bear backpack throughout her journey.

Royal support

William's video message was played on Scott Mills' Radio 2 breakfast show. «Sara, massive congratulations for what you're doing. You're so nearly there, just a little bit further, and I know the people of Pudsey will all come out and welcome you with huge open arms, big hugs, and hopefully, lots of your favourite crumpets. Keep going, you've done fantastically well, and the nation's so proud of you,» the Prince said.

Trevor Nelson revealed to Cox on Thursday that the fundraising total had topped £3 million. Cox called the amount «incredible» and thanked donors. «Everybody just giving a fiver or a tenner did it, that is amazing. Thank Thank you so much. Thanks to everybody who has donated, you're absolutely awesome,» she said.

During the challenge, Cox highlighted the support from women over 50. «We are not women of a certain vintage, we are not women of a certain age, we are women over 50,» she said. «It's just the beginning when you get to 50, I'm loving being 50.»

The BBC Children In Need telethon began at 7pm on Friday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, featuring performances from McFly singer Tom Fletcher and girl band Remember Monday.
