This book is a memoir in which the renowned journalist/author describes her student days at the Sorbonne, her early years as a foreign correspondent for ABC News and the discrimination she faced there, her marriage to Peter Jennings, their divorce and remarriage to Richard Holbrooke, one of the greatest diplomats of our time. She describes the life she led, with all the luxury, people, and jetlag. And then, of course, Holbrooke’s untimely death and her reaction to it. After her husband’s death, she returns to Paris, the source of many of her memories. Her descriptions of Paris and Parisians are not only beautiful, but also instructive.

Gabi i Kate przyjechaly z Australii na kilka tygodni do paryskiej szkoly gotowania, ktorej wlascicielka jest Sylvie. Kobiety sa na rozdrozu i nauka gotowania w Paryzu, z dala od wszystkich problemow, wydaje sie idealna ucieczka. Kate po szokujacej zdradzie meza, probuje znalezc spokoj emocjonalny, podczas gdy francusko-australijska artystka Gabi zmaga sie z blokada tworcza. Sylvie ma wlasne wyzwania – tajemnicza kampania nekajaca jej szkole (ten detektywistyczny watek jest zbyt latwy do rozwiazania). Kazdej z kobiet tych kilka tygodni przyniesie nieoczekiwane przemiany odmieniajace bieg ich zycia. Przyjemna lektura, bez przepisow, ale z wieloma opisami francuskich potraw i produktow.
I listened and enjoyed the descriptions of known and unknown to me places in Paris. It is a “sugary” romance, the adventures of the heart of three heroines. Gabi and Kate came from Australia to spend a few weeks at the Parisian cooking school, owned by Sylvie. Women are at a crossroads and learning to cook in Paris, away from all their problems, seems like the perfect escape. Kate struggles to find emotional peace after her husband’s shocking betrayal, while French-Australian artist Gabi struggles with a creative block. Sylvie has her own challenges – a mysterious campaign plaguing her school (this detective story is too easy to solve). For each of the women, these few weeks will bring unexpected turns that will change the course of their lives. A pleasant read/audio, without recipes, but with many descriptions of French dishes and products.

Autor nie tylko uwzglednia kompleksowy rozwoj polityczny, kulturalny i komercyjny, ktory doprowadzil do tego zjawiska, ale takze udaje mu sie przedstawic kazdego wplywowego rezysera, aktora/aktorke nowej fali wraz z ich waznymi dzielami. Ksiazka zawiera fabuly filmowe opisane w tak szczegolowy sposob, ze choćby jesli nie widzialo sie filmu, rozumie sie, o co chodzi. Autor omawia takze kwestie dotyczace technik, budzetow i dystrybucji we francuskich kinach; bardzo trafnie opisuje Chabrola jako „tego, ktory wywolal fale”, „elegancki realizm” Vardy i mojego ulubionego Truffauta jako „przywodce fali”.
An excellent account of the history of French New Wave cinema. The author not only covers the complex political, cultural and commercial developments that led to this phenomenon, but also manages to show every influential New Wave director, actor or actress and their important works. The book includes film plots described in such detail that even if you have not seen the film you will understand what is going on. The author also discusses techniques, budgets and distribution in French cinemas; he very aptly describes Chabrol as “the one who launched the wave”, Varda’s “elegant realism” and my favorite Truffaut as “the leader of the wave”.

Pierwsza z czterech ksiazek w serii, wydaje sie byc napisana przy uzyciu najtanszego oprogramowanie do pisania powiesci. Nie zdziwilabym sie gdyby ksiazka byla autorstwa AI, bo ogrom wydanych przez autora ksiazek przyprawia o zawrot glowy.
Bohaterka Diana nie moze sie oswoic z separacja po odkryciu, ze jej maz oswiadczyl sie kobiecie o 30 lat mlodszej, ale zdaje sobie sprawe, ze nadszedl czas na zmiany. Poswiecajac ostatnie 30 lat swojego zycia byciu obowiazkowa zona i matka oraz wspinajac sie po drabinie korporacyjnej, nie znalazla ani chwili, aby zrobic cokolwiek dla siebie. Diana nigdy nie zapomniala swojego pierwszego chlopaka, ktory chcial, aby po studiach dolaczyla do niego na rok w Europie. Mimo, ze chciala wyjechac, wydawalo jej sie to szalonym, romantycznym pomyslem, a rok przerwy, jak sadzila, przeszkodzilby jej w karierze. Ale teraz, uwaza, ze nadszedl czas na spedzenie romantycznego roku w Europie. Diana ma nadzieje rozpoczac swoja romantyczna przygode balem w Wersalu, ale kiedy noc przybiera przerazajacy obrot, zdaje sobie sprawe, ze bedzie musiala rozwiazac zagadke – w przeciwnym razie jej podroz zakonczy sie katastrofa. The first of four books in the series, seems to be written using the cheapest novel writing software. I wouldn’t be surprised if the book was written by AI, because the number of books published by the author is dizzying.
The heroine Diana can’t come to terms with the separation after discovering that her husband proposed to a woman 30 years his junior, but she realizes that it is time for a change. Having devoted the last 30 years of her life to being a dutiful wife, mother and climbing the corporate ladder, she never found a moment to do anything for herself. Diana never forgot her first boyfriend, who wanted her to join him in Europe for a year after college. Even though she wanted to leave, it seemed like a crazy, romantic idea, and a year off, she thought, would hinder her CV and career. But now, she thinks it’s time to spend a romantic year in Europe. Diana hopes to start her romantic adventure with a ball at Versailles, but when the night takes a terrifying turn, she realizes she will have to solve the mystery or her journey will end in disaster. It can be classified as a cozy mystery series filled with food and sleuthing, but overall it’s a waste of time. The plot is shallow and irritatingly stupid.

Sledzimy takze losy jej prawnuczki Micheline, ktora mieszka nad piekarnia i ktora po drugiej wojnie swiatowej ponownie ja otworzy. It didn’t really resonate with me, although the plot had all the elements, including Paris and two extraordinary women in two moments in history – connected of course by their love of baking. The story of a bakery in the Montmartre district of Paris, told in a dual timeline. We follow Lisette, who was born into an aristocratic family and who eventually goes to Montmartre to follow her love and opens a bakery in the 1870s. We also follow her great-granddaughter Micheline, who lives above the bakery and who reopens it after World War II. This is a story about a bakery, two women, recipes, love, the 1870s, when the Prussians surrounded Paris, and the later struggle for control of the city between the Communards and the federal government. And also struggling with the hardships of World War II and its aftermath.

In this chapter, the author visits Paris and discusses the works of such masters as Delacroix, David, Renoir, Manet, Degas, and many others. He finds the best of the best, which he describes with witty insouciance, sparing us from sore feet and unnecessary information. He focuses on three museums:
- The Louvre: an architectural treasure. Built in the 12th century as a fortress to protect the western edge of Paris and transformed into a royal building in the 14th century, it became a lavish, treasure-filled royal residence during the reign of Louis XIV (1643–1715). During the French Revolution, the Louvre was transformed once again—this time into a public museum, with the deposed royal collection at its core. The collection was later enriched by Napoleon’s military conquests.
- The Musée d’Orsay, which sits opposite the Jardin des Tuileries, built as a railway station to handle traffic to the 1900 World’s Fair is a remarkable architectural landmark. Converted into a museum in 1968, it now houses the world’s largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces.
- The Musée de l’Orangerie is unparalleled, housing Monet’s 8 magnificent Nymphéas [Water Lilies] compositions, created from different panels assembled side by side. All of these compositions are the same height (6.5 feet/1.97 m), but vary in length so that they can be hung on the curved walls of the two oval rooms. The artist left nothing to chance with this set of paintings, planning the forms, positions, rhythms and spaces between the different panels.
