Three people have been taken to hospital following a two-vehicle collision on the A1 in Northumberland, according to PA Media. The crash occurred just after 11am on Monday near Scremerston, prompting a major emergency response.

The A1 remains closed in both directions between the A1167 Scremerston Roundabout and the B6525 junction towards Ancroft and Doddington, as PA Media reports. Emergency services are currently at the scene with Northumbria Police leading the investigation.

All three casualties were transported to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care hospital following the incident, according to Chronicle Live. The North East Ambulance Service was called to the scene at 10:58am and deployed an extensive medical response.

Emergency response

The medical response included three ambulance crews, one community paramedic and one duty officer, as Chronicle Live reports. Scottish Ambulance Service also provided support, demonstrating cross-border emergency coordination near the England-Scotland boundary.

Traffic is being diverted onto the A697 as an alternative route, according to PA Media. National Highways has warned the road is expected to remain closed for several hours while collision investigation work continues.

Travel disruption

The closure affects a major England-Scotland route, causing significant disruption for cross-border travel, as Chronicle Live reports. National Highways has advised drivers to allow extra journey time and consider re-routing or delaying their journeys if this closure impacts their planned route.
